A Year in Review: MP Sonia Sidhu Celebrates 2017, A Year of Accomplishments

MP for Brampton South reviews what we’ve achieved together in the second full year of her mandate

Brampton, ON – Looking back at 2017, Sonia Sidhu is celebration a successful year as Member of Parliament for Brampton South. The year saw Canadians of all backgrounds come together and celebrate Canada 150 marking 150 years since Canadian Confederation. It has been a remarkable year of achievements for Canada, the Government of Canada, and MP Sidhu.

“This year we built upon our successes and continued our hard work to help the middle class and those working hard to join it,” said MP Sidhu. “I want to extend my thanks to my constituents for making Canada 150 a fond memory of coming together and working hard as a community for all”.

“We have done a lot of work over these last two years, and there is still a lot of work to be done” remarked MP Sidhu. “Thank you for engaging and connecting with me again this year, and I look forward to working hard on your behalf in the years to come. I want to wish all Bramptonians a happy new year and hope for a successful 2018”.

MP Sidhu highlighted achievements and major milestones for her office over the past year, including:

From July 2016 to June 2017, the Canada Child benefit put $105,452,000 back into the pockets of families in Brampton South for warm winter clothes, groceries, and daily essentials.

MP Sidhu joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Brampton to announce the strengthening of the Canada Child Benefit that has helped nine out of ten families. The strengthened Canada Child Benefit will keeps pace with the rising cost of living, by making annual cost of living increases to the CCB starting in July 2018—two years ahead of schedule.

MP Sidhu attended 300+ events between Brampton and Ottawa, the majority of them being community events in Brampton.

Over 100+ meetings with constituents and stakeholders concerning a wide variety of issues ranging from environmental sustainability to healthy eating.

The Canada Summer Jobs program had 46 projects approved in Brampton South, creating exiting and important job opportunities for Brampton South youth.

Brampton receiving funding of just over $32.4 million under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund for various transit projects such as extending Züm Bovaird transit service along Airport Road and expanding the Sandalwood Transit Facility.

Under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Project, Brampton received nearly $3 million in funding to support just over 60 projects. Projects include making improvements to community infrastructure and community centres, such as PAMA and the Union St. YMCA.

Hosted the Minister of Status of Women, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, in Brampton South and highlighted women entrepreneurs in Brampton and their businesses, in addition to hosting a Q&A session on women’s empowerment with 40 youth.

Hosted Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, in Brampton South to highlight Budget 2017 and discuss the government’s commitment to growing, strengthening, and helping the middle class.

Hosted the Minister of Finance, the Honourable Bill Morneau, in Brampton South to meet with Brampton business leaders.

Joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Brampton to announce the government’s $125 Million investment into the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

Joined Mayor Jeffrey and the City of Brampton as November was proclaimed as Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14 as Diabetes Awareness Day in Brampton.

Joined Mayor Jeffrey in announcing that the Government of Canada would be providing $105,000 in funding the Muskoka Chairs Project for Brampton to celebrate Canada 150

Launched the second year of the Brampton South Constituency Youth Council to engage young leaders in Brampton to make differences in their communities.

MP Sidhu opened her office doors to constituents to provide tax-related assistance as part of the 2017 Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

MP Sidhu hosted her 2nd Annual Open House and was joined by nearly 100 constituents, neighbours, friends, and community leaders.

Held town hall meetings and/or consultation sessions on various topics such as the opioid crisis, business, disability and accessibility, and regulations on Cannabis.

Spoke in the House of Commons 70 times since becoming a Member of Parliament through participating in debate, delivering speeches, making statements, remarking on Bills such as Bill S-228, the Child Health Protection Act, and seconding motions such as M-126, a motion to recognize the contribution of Portuguese Canadians by declaring June as Portuguese Heritage Month.

As chair of the All-Party Diabetes Caucus, MP Sidhu held Canada-wide consultations to receive input about Canada’s Healthy Eating Strategy, including revisions to the Food Guide, and diabetes prevention and management.

As Chair of the All-Party Diabetes Caucus, MP Sidhu attended the Global Diabetes Policy Forum in Rome. Members from 38 countries joined the global movement to share, consider, and endorse best practice approaches to care in order to curb the global epidemic that is diabetes

Spoke just over 250 times this year in the Standing Committee on Health, discussing issues of national importance with experts and colleagues on issues ranging from antimicrobial resistance to Lyme disease to a national pharmacare system.
