Canada Day
Dear Constituents,

As I travel around Brampton South, it’s great to see our community entering stage two of COVID-19 reopening with ongoing care. Now, even as the weather gets warmer, we must keep up our efforts and follow public health guidelines to keep each other safe.

The best thing you can do to prevent spreading COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds. Stay at home if you are ill and maintain a 2-metre physical distance from others. When physical distancing is difficult, the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends wearing a non-medical mask or homemade face covering.

The Region of Peel has announced that they will soon make masks mandatory in all commercial and indoor public spaces. There will be exceptions, yet I encourage you to take a look at the guide on how to safely use a non-medical mask or face covering to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets. View it here: https://bit.ly/2YTiKaa.

Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen neighbours helping neighbours and the true spirit of generosity and community here in Brampton. I had a wonderful time celebrating our Canadian values this week through virtual Canada Day celebrations. Thank you to all those who took part, I hope you found some fun ways to enjoy the day while staying safe.

It was a pleasure to deliver complimentary Canada Day lawn signs to residents in Brampton South. We also facilitated sign pick-ups at the office while practicing physical distancing. It was great to engage with constituents, hearing feedback about our COVID-19 relief programs.

As always, my office and I are here to help with any questions or feedback and can be reached by phone at 905-846-0076 or by email at [email protected].

Stay safe while enjoying your summer activities,

Sonia Sidhu, M.P. Brampton South.

ONE-TIME PAYMENT FOR SENIORS COMING JULY 6TH

Many Canadian seniors are facing significant health, economic, and social challenges due to COVID-19. They built this country, and now they need our help.
We are pleased to share that seniors will receive their special one-time payment on July 6.
Our Government is taking additional action to provide Canadian seniors with greater financial security and give them the help they need during this crisis:
Issuing a one-time tax-free payment of $300 for those who are eligible for the Old Age Security pension and a further $200 for those who are eligible for GIS, the Allowance or the Allowance for the Survivor—worth $500 for seniors who receive both.
As we go through this unprecedented challenge, our Government will continue to be there for Canadian seniors.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

On Wednesday, Canadians across the country came together virtually to celebrate the amazing country we call home – and the people we share it with.
This year also marked the 40th anniversary of the official adoption of our national anthem, "O Canada," and the essential role the Métis Nation played in Manitoba joining Confederation 150 years ago.
Canada is a country where we understand that diversity, peace and compassion are our strengths. Our work to ensure that everyone has an equal and fair chance at success is never finished.
We must commit ourselves to the work that remains, and recommit ourselves to true reconciliation with Indigenous, Metis and Inuit communities.
Although this year’s celebrations looked a little different, Canada Day is a valuable opportunity for Canadians to reflect on where we are as a country, and move forward, together.

THE NEW NAFTA COMES INTO EFFECT

Our government moved forward with the new NAFTA because it is good for Canadian workers, good for Canadian exporters, and good for Canadian families.
On July 1st, this new progressive trade agreement came into force.
In January, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with workers at ABC Technologies right here in Brampton. The new NAFTA means they can feel more confident about their jobs because it removes the threat of auto tariffs and protects our supply chains.
The agreement preserves the important benefits of NAFTA, modernizes the agreement, and makes it easier for Canadian companies to benefit from preferential access to the U.S and Mexican markets.
The agreement’s entry into force will also help ensure that North America emerges stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are committed to working with our NAFTA partners to ensure this new agreement becomes a success for all three countries.
