Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, issued the following statement commemorating Nutrition Month:
March 16, 2022 – Brampton
Healthy eating has a significant impact on the health of Canadians and on the healthcare system. March is Nutrition Month—a time to remember that leading a healthy lifestyle helps prevent chronic disease and improves lives.
Just this month, our government announced nearly $1 million in funding for a new research project at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. The project aims to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the eating behaviours, dietary intake, and food environment of children aged 0 to 12 in the Greater Toronto Area. Research is an important part of everything that we do and this will improve the well-being of our kids to help them reach their full potential.
Eating and drinking unhealthy foods and beverages are linked to increased health risks including obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. As a healthcare professional, a diabetes educator, and as a Parliamentarian, I have encouraged Canadians to make healthy lifestyle choices like eating well, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Our government has taken action through our healthy eating strategy and Canada’s new food guide, by strengthening nutrition labelling on food products and eliminating industrial-produced trans fats in foods.
Good nutrition means your body gets everything it needs to work its best. So, make it a habit! Nutritious foods can go a long way to helping you reach your goals. This Nutrition Month, take some time to learn about how you can lead a healthier and longer life.
