News Release – Brampton, Ontario
Reducing pollution from the transportation sector is critical to Canada achieving its climate targets. That’s why the Government of Canada is supporting the City of Brampton’s strategic efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to meet future ridership demand for public transit.
Last week, MP Sonia Sidhu was proud to jointly announce $175,000 to support the feasibility of using zero tailpipe-emission buses (ZEBs) on Brampton Transit’s route network. This funding is just one example of many that the City of Brampton is receiving to electrify our future, reduce pollution and invest in clean transportation infrastructure.
Since 2015, Canada has invested a historic $1 billion to make EVs more affordable and chargers more accessible for Canadians. These investments are supporting the establishment of a nation-wide network of chargers including in Brampton, while federal rebates of up to $5,000 are helping more Canadians make the switch to an EV.
Last year, the federal government announced $400 million towards 450 zero-emission buses for Brampton Transit to help reduce emissions, get residents around safely and build cleaner, more inclusive communities. In April, we announced $445,000 in funding for Peel Region for up to 80 new EV charging stations. We also announced that Stellantis’ Brampton plant will be retooled to produce electric vehicles, creating good jobs and driving economic growth.
This demonstrates Canada’s continued strength in automotive production and is another step toward building a strong, healthy future for Bramptonians.
