News Release - Brampton, Ontario
Crisis hotlines are an essential lifeline for people affected by gender-based violence. Throughout the pandemic, the demand for crisis hotline services has significantly increased across Canada, and the demand continues to persist. In Peel Region, intimate partner and family violence have become the number one reason for 911 calls, making crisis hotlines an essential service to our community.
Today, MP Sonia Sidhu is pleased to highlight that the federal government has allocated $8 million in funding to support crisis hotlines in Ontario. Since 2022, the Government of Canada has been working on bilateral agreements with every province and territory in Canada to support crisis hotlines. This four-year funding will ensure crisis hotlines in Ontario can provide more comprehensive services, resources, and support to Brampton residents who have been affected by gender-based and family violence.
This announcement builds on the Government of Canada’s National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence, which includes more than 1 billion in funding to support survivors and prevent violence against women and girls. This has directly impacted residents in need of support in Brampton South.
“As Vice Chair of The Standing Committee on the Status of Women, I will continue to advocate for additional resources to fight gender-based violence. Today's additional federal funding will help provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space for help, resources, and support. I am confident that the increased support for crisis hotlines will improve outcomes for those affected by this violence in Brampton South and across the province” -MP Sonia Sidhu.
