Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu tables report with Standing Committee on the Status of Women on the Mental Health of Young Women and Girls in Canada

As Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu welcomes the tabling of a new report; “A Step-by-Step Approach to Supporting the Mental Health og Young Women and Girls in Canada” which has several focuses on the various factors that can contribute to mental health challenges. 

To understand how various factors like social media and COVID-19 have affected the mental health in young women and girls, the committee approached this study keeping in mind the diverse needs and solutions needed to tackle the situation. 56 witnesses were heard as well as 15 briefs reviewed by the committee.

The committee’s report focusses on:

  • understanding the mental health experiences and struggles facing young women and girls in Canada;
  • the factors that may contribute to the mental health struggles facing young women and girls; and
  • supports and services, as well as gaps within these, that aim to meet the mental health needs of young women and girls.

Understanding the unique and diverse mental health experiences of women and girls in Canada is an important priority area for all levels of government in Canada. The committee makes 18 recommendations in the report to improve the mental health outcomes for young women and girls in Canada.
