News Release

Brampton, Ontario

Human trafficking is a serious issue that affects millions of people worldwide, and the Region of Peel is not immune to this crime. Peel is a high-risk area for human trafficking due to its diverse population and proximity to major highways and transportation hubs.

As Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, Brampton South Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu is committed to improving prevention and support across the country. This week, the committee will embark on a national tour to investigate the human trafficking of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals for sexual exploitation in Canada. The committee will visit Vancouver, Toronto, Sault Ste Marie, and Halifax to examine ways to prevent the trafficking of individuals and to improve Canadian law enforcement's ability to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators. During the tour, the committee will hear from experts in the field, including law enforcement, service providers, and survivors of human trafficking. The committee will also engage with community organizations and stakeholders to learn about their efforts to prevent trafficking and support survivors.

"Human trafficking is a horrific crime that destroys lives," said MP Sidhu. "I look forward to hearing from experts and community members on how we can strengthen our response to this issue," she said.

The committee’s final report will include recommendations to the Government of Canada that will be informed by this travel, written submissions and by witness testimony. MP Sidhu looks forward to hearing from Canadians across the country on this important topic.
