Bramptonians and all Canadians deserve to feel safe in their community, and the federal government has announced a comprehensive plan to combat gun crime and gang violence in order to achieve this. Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu was thrilled to participate in an announcement this morning alongside her colleagues and the Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Marco Mendicino to announce $390 million over the next five years in various initiatives designed to prevent gun and gang violence before it occurs. Provinces and territories will receive funding to support law enforcement and prevention programs. 

Peel Police, under the leadership of Chief Nishan Duraiappah, has been working tirelessly to combat gun violence and gang activity in the Peel Region. They have also been working closely with other law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and residents to develop effective strategies to prevent gun violence and to provide support to victims and their families. Chief Nish has emphasized the importance of collaboration and community engagement in addressing these issues, and his leadership has been instrumental in the efforts to make Peel Region a safer place for all residents.

No single program or initiative can tackle the challenge of gun crime on its own. The funding announced today builds on the success of the initial Initiative to Take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence (ITAAGGV), announced in 2017, which has already supported important efforts to combat gun and gang violence in different provinces. The Government's plan to keep Canadians safe involves multiple elements, including strong border security, legislation such as Bill C-21, the government's strongest legislation against gun violence, and upcoming bail reform. Finally, the plan includes major investments announced today to support strong prevention strategies.
