Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu highlights a strong federal investment in Brampton’s transition to a fully electric bus fleet

News Release

Brampton, Ontario

Today, Brampton South Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu joined her federal and municipal colleagues to announce a joint investment of $1.1 million to plan the electrification of the City of Brampton’s transit system.

This will support the development of an implementation strategy and rollout plan for the transition to a full fleet of zero emission buses in Brampton. Of this amount, the Government of Canada is contributing 80% ($880,000), while the City of Brampton is contributing 20% ($220,000).

The federal government has a strong record of supporting transit projects in Brampton and this is a critical milestone in the City’s plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. The transition to zero emission buses is anticipated to cut approximately 115 tonnes of CO2 emissions per bus every year, and approximately 53,000 tonnes annually – which is the equivalent of removing 12,000 cars from the roads.

“The positive impact of this investment extends far beyond reducing our carbon footprint,” said MP Sonia Sidhu. “It will lead to cleaner air, I healthier communities, and a more sustainable transportation system, one that prioritizes the needs of our residents,” she said.

By investing in infrastructure, the federal government is growing Canada’s economy, increasing the resiliency of our communities, and improving the lives of Canadians.
