News Release – Brampton, Ontario
Today, Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada's Grocery Rebate, introduced as part of Budget 2023, will be issued to eligible residents in Brampton, and across Canada. This rebate aims to provide financial support to eligible Canadians, alongside the quarterly GST/HST credit payment. This builds on a suite of measures to help make life more affordable for Canadians, including the Canada Child Benefit and federal child care program which has cut fees by at least 50 per cent and created more child care spaces all across the country.
The Grocery Rebate will be equivalent to double the amount of the GST/HST credit received for January 2023. To be eligible for the Grocery Rebate, individuals must have been entitled to receive the GST/HST credit for January 2023. It is important to note that filing a tax return for the year 2021 is required, even if there was no income to report for that year.
Please be aware that while you may be entitled to the Grocery Rebate, you may not qualify for the July GST/HST credit or vice versa. The Grocery Rebate is calculated based on your 2021 tax return, while the next quarterly GST/HST credit payment in July 2023 is calculated based on your 2022 tax return. We encourage you to refer to your Notice of (Re)determination for further information.
