News Release

December 18, 2023 – Brampton, Ontario

As the Fall Legislative sitting concludes, Brampton South Member of Parliament, Sonia Sidhu, extends heartfelt appreciation for the collective strides achieved in enhancing the lives of Canadian families and workers throughout the year.
MP Sonia Sidhu proudly presents the substantial progress and ongoing initiatives spearheaded by the government, all dedicated to fostering the well-being of Canadians—families, children, and seniors. The successful rollout of the $10-a-day childcare initiative has significantly reduced family expenses, especially in Toronto, where the average annual childcare cost was a staggering $22,394 in 2020. Families can now anticipate a substantial reduction of $19,790 in this essential expense under our plan.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan unveiled in Budget 2023. With a substantial $13 billion investment over the next five years, starting in 2023–24, this initiative aims to extend dental coverage to uninsured residents with an annual family income below $90,000. Those with family incomes under $70,000 will enjoy zero co-pays, emphasizing the commitment to healthcare for seniors and children. Anticipated to launch today, on December 18, 2023, the CDCP is a pivotal healthcare commitment.
Focusing on resolving housing challenges remains a primary objective, implementing robust strategies to encourage affordable housing, especially in Brampton. The elimination of federal GST on rental apartment building construction expedites the creation of much-needed homes. Support for first-time homebuyers includes doubling the First Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit and introducing a Tax-Free First Home Savings Account. A recent federal announcement of $114 million through the Housing Accelerator Fund will contribute significantly to constructing 24,000 homes in Brampton. Ongoing initiatives, such as the Affordable Housing and Groceries Act, showcase the dedication to removing the GST on new rental housing and enhancing competition, especially in the grocery sector. Bail reform legislation and strengthened labor laws reinforce the commitment to community safety and fair negotiations.

Looking ahead to 2024, Sonia Sidhu reaffirms her dedication as the Member of Parliament for Brampton South, prioritizing the well-being and safety of residents and all Canadians. Grateful for the shared journey, she aspires to shape a future that is more affordable, prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable for the community.
