Supports for Seniors: a priority in Brampton and across Canada

News release
September 9, 2024 Brampton, Ontario

After a lifetime of hard work, seniors deserve to live in dignity and enjoy their retirement. Today, Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu highlighted the important work that the Government of Canada has been doing for our beloved seniors. Our government restored the age of eligibility for OAS/GIS to 65 after Conservative politicians increased it to 67, preventing 100,000 seniors from plunging into poverty.

Our Liberal government has always been there for seniors and introduced measures to make life more affordable for them. After Conservative politicians raised the retirement age to 67, we lowered it back down to 65. We boosted the OAS and GIS to make sure seniors could keep up with the rising cost of living. We’ve introduced the Age Well at Home initiative which will deliver practical support to help seniors continue to live safely and independently in their own homes and have invested billions of dollars to ensure seniors in long-term care are protected and well cared for.

Additionally, our government is rolling out the Canadian Dental Care Plan that will help almost 9 million Canadians that do not have dental insurance get access to oral health care – primarily seniors. To date, more than 2 million seniors have been approved for dental care under the CDCP. More than 200,000 seniors have already accessed the care they need thanks to the CDCP. The Canadian Dental Care Plan is going to make life better for millions of Canadians, so they won’t have to choose between paying their bills and getting oral health care.

We’ll continue to support seniors and strengthen our communities for decades to come.

“Every year, Government of Canada programs make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors across Canada. When seniors can fully participate in society and lead a healthy life, everybody benefits. Our progress builds on our government’s continued commitment to empower seniors and strengthen their connection within their communities.”
