Canada is Getting High-Speed Rail making it possible to travel from Toronto to Montréal in just three hours – MP Sonia Sidhu

Last week, our federal government announced a groundbreaking high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. This transformative project, named Alto, will revolutionize transportation in Canada, significantly benefiting the residents of Brampton and beyond.

The Toronto-Quebec City corridor is a vital megaregion, home to 18 million people and a significant contributor to Canada's GDP. The new high-speed rail network will span approximately 1,000 km, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/hour, with stops in key cities including Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City. This will drastically reduce travel times, making it possible to travel from Montréal to Toronto in just three hours.

MP Sonia Sidhu stated: "Today's announcement marks a historic moment for our community and our country. The high-speed rail network will not only enhance connectivity and reduce travel times but also create thousands of good-paying jobs and boost our economy. This project is a testament to our commitment to investing in infrastructure that benefits all Canadians."

Key Benefits of the High-Speed Rail Network:

  • Economic Growth: The project is expected to boost Canada's GDP by up to $35 billion annually and create over 51,000 jobs during construction.
  • Environmental Impact: Electrified high-speed rail will help Canada meet its climate targets by reducing emissions.
  • Enhanced Connectivity: The new rail network will connect major economic hubs, providing more opportunities for businesses and workers.
  • Community Development: Improved transportation will spur affordable housing development and boost tourism across the region.

The consortium Cadence has been selected to co-design, build, finance, operate, and maintain this project. Cadence brings together world-renowned companies with expertise in large-scale transportation infrastructure. The collaboration with Alto will ensure the highest standards in design, development, and operation.

MP Sonia Sidhu added: "This project is about more than just transportation; it's about building a better future for our children and grandchildren. By investing in high-speed rail, we are investing in a more connected, prosperous, and sustainable Canada."
