“Prime Minister Mark Carney Cancels Consumer Carbon Tax” – Sonia Sidhu

MP Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, welcomes the recent decision by Prime Minister Mark Carney to cancel the consumer carbon tax, effective April 1, 2025.

Prime Minister Carney signed a prime ministerial directive on his first day in office, ending the consumer carbon tax that had been a significant point of contention in recent years. This move is part of a broader strategy to address affordability concerns for Canadians while continuing to combat climate change.

"This decision will provide immediate financial relief to Canadians who have been struggling with high inflation and rising costs," said MP Sonia Sidhu.

While the Canada Carbon Rebate will not continue after mid-April, the government will introduce a new middle-class tax cut. This tax cut will lower taxes for individuals earning less than $150,000 a year, with the Basic Personal Amount (BPA) exemption increased by almost $2,000, making the first $15,000 earned tax-free. This measure is expected to benefit approximately 20 million Canadians, saving single individuals close to $300 annually and families nearly $600 annually.

Additionally, the government will provide consumer incentives for cost-saving heat pumps and home energy retrofits. These actions aim to return more money to Canadians, ensure continued efforts to tackle climate change, and build the strongest economy in the G7.

Canadians will receive their final carbon rebate on April 22nd, ensuring that those who have been relying on these payments are not left without support. Prime Minister Carney emphasized that this change is part of a larger set of measures aimed at ensuring Canada's competitiveness and commitment to fighting climate change.

"This government is focused on action and delivering results for Canadians," added MP Sidhu. "We are committed to building a sustainable and competitive economy that benefits everyone."
