Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s important meetings and discussions at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, underscoring Canada’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing shared priorities.
During the Summit, Prime Minister Carney met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump to discuss pressing trade issues and reaffirm the importance of a strong economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States. The leaders agreed to pursue negotiations toward a new bilateral agreement within the next 30 days, while also committing to enhanced cooperation on critical minerals, border security, and the fight against gun and drug smuggling.
Prime Minister Carney also held productive discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. The leaders emphasized the deepening Canada-EU relationship, with a focus on expanding free trade, defending rules-based international trade, and addressing shared defense and security challenges. They also reiterated their united support for Ukraine and the importance of securing a just and lasting peace.
In addition to these bilateral meetings, Prime Minister Carney engaged with fellow G7 leaders including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and European Union leaders. Together, they reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing international trade, promoting global economic stability, and addressing shared challenges such as climate change, energy security, and geopolitical tensions.
