Government of Canada’s announcement of a bold new chapter in Canada’s relationship with the European Union. Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside EU leaders President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and President Ursula von der Leyen, unveiled the New EU-Canada Strategic Partnership of the Future—a comprehensive initiative to deepen cooperation in trade, security, climate action, and digital innovation.
“This is a historic moment for Canada and for communities like Brampton,” said MP Sidhu. “Our city is home to a vibrant, globally connected population. Strengthening our ties with the EU will open new doors for local businesses, create good jobs, and ensure a more secure and sustainable future for all Canadians.”
The new partnership will launch wide-ranging negotiations to enhance collaboration in:
• Trade and Economic Security – creating new opportunities for Canadian exporters and entrepreneurs.
• Digital Transition – supporting innovation and technology partnerships.
• Climate Action – advancing joint efforts to combat environmental degradation.
• Security and Defence – through the newly signed Canada-EU Security and Defence Partnership.
This agreement also marks Canada’s first step toward participation in Security Action for Europe (SAFE), part of the EU’s ReArm Europe Plan/Readiness 2030. This initiative will unlock significant defense procurement and industrial opportunities for Canadian companies.
Importantly, the new Security and Defense Partnership will also support Canada and EU Member States who are NATO Allies, helping them meet capability targets more quickly and economically. This reinforces Canada’s commitment to collective security and a rules-based international order.
“Canada’s new government has a mandate to diversify and strengthen international partnerships. To that end, we took an historic step forward today to deepen Canada’s relationship with the European Union. Through increased co-operation in defence, trade, and commerce, we’ll create greater prosperity, security, and stability on both sides of the Atlantic.” — The Rt. Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
The announcement comes as Prime Minister Carney concludes a visit to Belgium, where he also met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and paid tribute to Canadian Armed Forces members at the Antwerp Schoonselhof Military Cemetery.
