New Federal Measures to Strengthen Canada’s Steel Industry and Support Workers – MP Sonia Sidhu

The federal government’s bold new measures to protect and strengthen Canada’s steel industry, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney in Hamilton last week is a welcoming news for Canadian workers.

These measures are designed to stabilize the domestic steel market, protect Canadian jobs, and ensure that Canadian-made steel is prioritized in major national infrastructure and housing projects. The announcement includes new tariffs to prevent unfair trade practices, major investments in worker training, and support for steel-related businesses.

“Brampton is home to a strong manufacturing and construction sector that depends on a stable and competitive steel industry,” said MP Sidhu. “These new measures will help protect local jobs, support small and medium-sized businesses, and ensure that Brampton workers are part of building Canada’s future with Canadian-made steel.”

Key highlights of the federal plan include:
New Tariffs to Protect Canadian Steel: Tariff rate quotas will be tightened for non-free trade agreement countries, and a 25% tariff will apply to steel imports containing Chinese steel.
Support for Workers: $70 million in Labour Market Development Agreements will provide training and income support for up to 10,000 steel workers.
Investment in Innovation: $1 billion through the Strategic Innovation Fund to help steel companies modernize and grow.
Support for SMEs: Enhanced access to financing through the Business Development Bank of Canada and Regional Development Agencies.
Prioritizing Canadian Steel in Federal Projects: New procurement rules will require federally funded projects to use Canadian steel.

These actions will help ensure that Brampton’s workers and businesses are well-positioned to thrive in a changing global economy.

“This is about building a resilient economy that works for everyone,” said MP Sidhu. “By investing in Canadian steel and Canadian workers, we’re building a stronger Brampton and a stronger Canada.”
