Federal Government strengthen members of Canadian Armed Forces and provide support to protect softwood lumber industry – Sonia Sidhu

MP Sonia Sidhu welcomes two major announcements from Prime Minister Mark Carney that demonstrate the federal government’s commitment to strengthening Canada’s economy and supporting those who serve.

In Trenton, the Prime Minister unveiled the largest pay raise in a generation for members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). This includes:
• A 20% increase in starting pay for Regular Force privates.
• A 13% raise for lieutenant-colonels and below, and 8% for colonels and above.
• A new Military Service Pay benefit tied to years of service.
• Additional compensation for frequent relocations, disaster response, and combat training.

“These investments recognize the sacrifice and dedication of our service members and will help attract and retain the talent needed to defend Canada,” said MP Sidhu.

In West Kelowna, the Prime Minister announced a $1.25 billion investment to transform Canada’s softwood lumber industry, including:
• $700 million in loan guarantees to support restructuring.
• $500 million for product and market diversification, including Indigenous-led initiatives.
• Federal procurement reforms to prioritize Canadian lumber in housing and infrastructure.
• $50 million for worker training and income supports for over 6,000 affected workers.

“These measures will help Canadian industries pivot to new opportunities, create good jobs, and ensure our economy remains resilient and competitive,” said MP Sidhu.

Quote from Prime Minister Mark Carney: “The women and men of our Canadian Armed Forces make Canada strong, and today we are investing in that strength. With a pay raise for every single CAF member, we are strengthening our military, recognizing their sacrifice, and giving service members the resources, confidence, and certainty they need to serve.”
