Updates on New Canada-U.S. Trade Developments and Commitment to Brampton Workers and Businesses from Sonia Sidhu

Following the Prime Minister’s recent statement on Canada’s evolving trade relationship with the United States, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, Sonia Sidhu, is reaffirming her commitment to protecting local jobs, supporting Brampton’s businesses, and ensuring our community remains competitive in a changing global
economy.

“The Prime Minister’s announcement marks a pivotal moment in Canada-U.S. trade relations,” said MP Sidhu. “As Canada removes tariffs on U.S. goods covered under CUSMA, we are
preserving our unique advantage in North American trade while standing firm on strategic sectors like steel, aluminum, and autos—industries that are vital to Brampton’s economy.”
The new measures, which take effect on September 1, 2025, will ensure that over 85% of Canada-U.S. trade remains tariff-free, maintaining Canada’s position as the United States’ most
favourably treated trading partner. MP Sidhu emphasized that this is a win for Canadian workers and families, especially in Brampton, where manufacturing, logistics, and small businesses play
a central role in the local economy.

“As we prepare for the upcoming CUSMA review and launch consultations on Canada’s trade priorities, I will continue advocating for Brampton’s interests—ensuring our voices are heard and
our industries are protected,” Sidhu added.

The federal government also announced plans to unveil a comprehensive industrial strategy aimed at boosting Canadian competitiveness, supporting domestic production, and diversifying
exports. MP Sidhu noted that this strategy will be crucial for Brampton’s growth, particularly in sectors impacted by recent U.S. trade actions.

“Brampton is ready to lead in this new era of trade and innovation. Together, we will build a stronger, more resilient economy—one that creates good jobs, supports families, and positions
Canada as a global leader.”
