New Federal Measures to Combat Crime and Build Safer Communities

Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a bold and comprehensive plan to strengthen public safety, protect Canadians, and build safer communities across the country. As the MP for Brampton South, I am looking forward to the implementation of these decisive actions and reaffirm my commitment to supporting policies that make our neighbourhoods safer and more resilient.

The new measures include amendments to the Criminal Code to ensure violent and repeat offenders face tougher consequences, including reverse-onus bail provisions, consecutive sentencing, and stricter penalties for organized retail theft and sexual offences. These changes reflect what Canadians have been asking for: a justice system that prioritizes the safety of victims and communities.

The legislation will include the following amendments:

  • Introducing reverse-onus bail for major crimes.
  • Allowing consecutive sentencing so multiple crimes mean longer time behind bars.
  • Imposing harsher penalties for organised retail theft.
  • Restricting conditional sentences for a number of sexual offences.

In addition, the federal government will invest $1.8 billion over four years to expand the capacity of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), including hiring 1,000 new officers and enhancing efforts to combat financial crimes, online exploitation, and organized criminal networks. These investments will help law enforcement agencies respond more effectively to emerging threats and protect our economic and national security.

Importantly, this plan also recognizes that enforcement alone is not enough. By working with provinces, territories, and municipalities, the government will address the root causes of crime through investments in affordable housing, mental health supports, addiction services, and youth programs. These are the kinds of community-based solutions that make a lasting difference.

From tackling gun and drug smuggling at our borders to protecting Canadians from hate and violent intimidation, Canada’s new government is taking action to build a safer, stronger future for all.

“In Brampton South and across Canada, families deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities. I fully support the Prime Minister’s plan to strengthen our justice system, invest in policing, and address the root causes of crime. These measures will help build the kind of Canada we all want – one where opportunity, safety, and fairness are within reach for everyone.” Said MP Sonia Sidhu.

Quote from The Right Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada:

“In Canada, you should be able to wake up, get in your car, drive to work, come home, and sleep soundly at night. When laws repeatedly fail to protect those basic rights, we need new laws. Canada’s new government is taking decisive action to combat crime and build stronger communities – where Canadians can feel secure in their homes, safe in their neighbourhoods, and in control of their future.”
