Federal government’s landmark investment in the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP), a transformative initiative that will strengthen Ontario’s energy grid, create thousands of high-paying jobs, and position Canada as a global leader in clean nuclear innovation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $2 billion investment through the Canada Growth Fund to support the construction and operation of four small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington site in Bowmanville. This project is a cornerstone of Canada’s clean energy future and will make Canada the first G7 nation to bring SMR technology online.
“This is a generational investment in Canada’s energy independence and economic strength,” said MP Sidhu. “The Darlington project will power over 300,000 homes with clean, reliable energy and support thousands of careers across Ontario—including right here in Brampton, where many families are part of our province’s growing nuclear supply chain.”
The project is expected to sustain 3,700 jobs annually and create 18,000 jobs during construction, driving $500 million into Ontario’s nuclear sector each year. Ontario Power Generation will remain the majority owner and operator, with the Canada Growth Fund and the Ontario government’s Building Ontario Fund holding minority stakes.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized the national significance of the investment, stating:
“The Darlington New Nuclear Project will create thousands of high-paying careers and power hundreds of thousands of Ontario homes with clean energy. This is a generational investment that will build lasting security, prosperity, and opportunities. We’re building big things to build Canada Strong.”
MP Sidhu added: “This is about building a future where Canadians can count on affordable energy, good jobs, and a cleaner environment.”
The Darlington investment is part of a broader strategy to fast-track major nation-building projects through the newly launched Major Projects Office, which aims to reduce red tape and accelerate critical infrastructure development.
MP Sidhu continues to advocate for Brampton and the Peel Region to be central players in Canada’s clean energy transition, ensuring that local workers, innovators, and businesses benefit from these historic investments.
