Canada’s New Indo-Pacific Strategy to Strengthen Trade, Defence, and Economic Resilience – Sonia Sidhu

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ambitious new Indo-Pacific strategy was announced during his first official visit to the Republic of Korea. The strategy marks a transformative shift in Canada’s global engagement, with a focus on diversifying trade, strengthening defence partnerships, and unlocking new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

“Canada is stepping boldly into the future,” said MP Sidhu. “The Indo-Pacific region holds immense promise for Brampton’s entrepreneurs, manufacturers, and innovators. By expanding our partnerships beyond traditional markets, we are creating new pathways for growth and resilience—right here in Brampton and across Canada.”

During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, Prime Minister Carney announced several key initiatives, including:

  • A new Canada–Republic of Korea Security and Defence Cooperation Partnership, the first of its kind in the Indo-Pacific.
  • The conclusion of negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement to enhance collaboration in defence, cyber, and industrial security.
  • A Team Canada Trade Mission to Korea in 2026, aimed at boosting Canadian exports and investment.
  • The launch of free trade negotiations with Thailand, and a renewed Canada–Chile Strategic Partnership Framework focused on clean energy, critical minerals, and digital technologies.

“These initiatives are not just about international diplomacy—they’re about creating real opportunities for Brampton families,” said MP Sidhu. “Whether it’s advanced manufacturing, clean energy, or digital innovation, Brampton is ready to lead and benefit from Canada’s global leadership.”

“The world is changing fast, and Canada must bet big – on our people, our ideas, and our future. That means making bold, generational investments here at home and forging new partnerships abroad. The Indo-Pacific presents enormous opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses. Canada is ready to seize these opportunities and play to win.” Said the Rt. Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada

MP Sidhu also highlighted the importance of Canada’s commitment to hosting APEC in 2029, which will bring global attention to Canadian cities and industries.

“As we look ahead, I will continue advocating for Brampton’s voice in Canada’s international strategy,” Sidhu added. “Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive economy—one that reflects the talent and diversity of our community.”
