MP Sonia Sidhu Reflects on a Year of Progress for Brampton and Canada

As the new year begins, Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, is proud to share the progress made in 2025 toward building a stronger, more resilient Canada—and a brighter future for Brampton families.

Over the past year, the federal government delivered meaningful measures to make life more affordable for Canadians. Tax cuts for the middle class ensured that 22 million Canadians kept more of their hard-earned money, while the expansion of the Canadian Dental Care Plan brought coverage to nine million people. In addition, the National School Food Program was made permanent, guaranteeing nutritious meals for 400,000 children across the country.

Health care and infrastructure were also front and center. Through the Health Infrastructure Fund, $5 billion was invested nationwide, including $25 million for Toronto Metropolitan University’s new medical school right here in Brampton—a major step toward addressing physician shortages and improving access to care. Brampton also benefited from $179 million in funding to modernize transit and community infrastructure, supporting a growing city and improving quality of life for residents.

Housing and economic growth remained key priorities. The launch of Build Canada Homes, backed by $13 billion, is doubling the pace of home construction to help families find affordable housing. Canada also secured foreign investment of $70 billion—the largest foreign investment in our history—to build major projects that will create jobs and strengthen our economy.

Innovation and competitiveness were advanced through a $900 million investment in AI infrastructure, the full implementation of the Buy Canadian Policy with $100 million in new funding, and the creation of two major support programs: the $5 billion Strategic Response Fund and the $1 billion Regional Tariff Response Initiative, designed to help businesses navigate global challenges.

To further expand trade opportunities, $5 billion was committed over seven years to the Trade Diversification Corridors Fund, improving access to international markets for Canadian businesses.

“These achievements reflect our commitment to building a future where every Canadian has access to opportunity, security, and prosperity,” said MP Sidhu. “From health care to housing, innovation to trade, we are laying the foundation for a stronger Brampton and a stronger Canada.”

As 2026 begins, MP Sidhu looks forward to continuing her work with residents, businesses, and community leaders to keep building a brighter future for Brampton and beyond and wishes everyone a happy new year.
