Canada Secures Major New Economic and Security Wins Through Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Japan

Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Japan that will strengthen economic, energy, and security cooperation with the world’s fourth‑largest economy. With nearly $40 billion in annual bilateral trade and deep ties in automotive manufacturing—where Japanese companies produce 70% of Canada’s vehicles—this partnership positions Canada to attract new investment, create high-quality jobs, and modernize key industrial sectors. The agreement builds on Canada’s growing momentum abroad, including over $5 billion in commercial agreements secured in India and up to $10 billion in investment commitments in Australia.

During his visit to Tokyo, the Prime Minister advanced major new opportunities in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and defence technologies. Canada and Japan committed to expanding cooperation on LNG and low‑emission energy, as well as nuclear technology, hydrogen, carbon capture, and grid modernization. Both countries will also deepen collaboration on semiconductors, AI, quantum technology, hydrogen fuel cells, and critical minerals—areas that are central to future competitiveness and resilient supply chains. To support further growth, Canada will welcome a major business delegation from Japan and lead a Team Canada Trade Mission to Japan in 2026.

The partnership also significantly strengthens defence and security cooperation. This includes three new memorandums of cooperation on emergency response, joint Coast Guard exercises, and efforts to combat illegal fishing, as well as expanded naval operations between the Royal Canadian Navy and Japan’s Self‑Defense Forces. A new Canada‑Japan Cyber Policy Dialogue will enhance cooperation on cybersecurity and emerging threats. In addition, the two countries agreed to deepen scientific collaboration, including joint marine research, climate and ecosystem studies, and advanced technology exchanges marking the 40th anniversary of the Canada‑Japan Science and Technology Agreement.
