Post‑secondary education is one of the most important investments Canada can make in its future. Ensuring that students can access education and training without undue financial barriers is essential to building a strong, skilled, and competitive workforce.
Today, the Government of Canada announced that it will extend temporary increases to Canada Student Financial Assistance grants and loans for the 2026–27 academic year, reinforcing its commitment to affordability for students and their families.
The extension maintains the 40% increase to non‑repayable Canada Student Grants for full‑time and part‑time students, students with disabilities, and students with dependants. It also continues the increase to the Canada Student Loan weekly limit from $210 to $300, helping students better manage the rising costs of post‑secondary education through interest‑free federal loans.
During the 2026–27 academic year, approximately 571,000 students across Canada are expected to benefit from the enhanced grants, while up to 422,000 students could benefit from the higher weekly loan limit.
In total, these measures represent an investment of nearly $1.2 billion to help keep post‑secondary education accessible and to support students as they build the skills and credentials needed for in‑demand jobs.
“Making post‑secondary education more affordable means giving students the freedom to focus on learning, gaining experience, and planning for their futures,” said Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament. “By extending these enhanced grants and loan supports, our government is continuing to invest in students, their potential, and the strength of Canada’s workforce. When students succeed, our communities and our economy are stronger.”
The Government of Canada continues to take action to lower costs for Canadians and ensure that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue education and training that meets their goals.
