Prime Minister Mark Carney Visits Brampton to Highlight the Enhanced Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit

On June 5, 2026, Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, joined Prime Minister Mark Carney at Chalo FreshCo in Brampton South to highlight the rollout of the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The visit underscored the federal government’s focus on affordability and delivering direct, timely support to Canadians as households continue to face pressure from rising costs of food and other essentials.

The global economic environment remains uncertain, but the government is prioritizing measures that put affordability at the centre of its economic approach. The announcement at Chalo FreshCo emphasized immediate relief for families while also laying the groundwork for longer-term financial stability through enhanced income supports.

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is designed to support more than 12 million low- and modest-income Canadians, providing both immediate assistance and ongoing quarterly payments to help offset the rising cost of everyday necessities.

Beginning June 5, 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency started issuing a one-time top-up equal to a 50% increase in the annual 2025–26 GST Credit value, delivering approximately $3.1 billion in immediate relief. Payments are issued automatically to eligible Canadians who already receive the GST Credit.

Beyond this initial top-up, the benefit provides a 25% increase over the GST Credit for five years starting in July 2026, delivering approximately $8.6 billion in additional support through 2030–31 and expanding eligibility to an additional 500,000 individuals and families.

Under the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit:

  • A single senior with $25,000 in net income will receive a one-time top-up of $267 plus a longer-term increase of $136 for the 2026-27 benefit year (total increase of $402). In total, they will receive $950 for the 2026-27 benefit year (including the top-up).
  • A couple with two children with $40,000 in net income will receive a one-time top-up of $533 plus an increase of $272 for the 2026-27 benefit year (total increase of $805). In total, they will receive $1,890 for the 2026-27 benefit year (including the top-up).

After the one-time payment, eligible Canadians will begin receiving enhanced quarterly payments starting in July 2026, issued at the beginning of each quarter to ensure predictable and timely support for ongoing household expenses.

These payments are provided in addition to existing federal benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit, the Canada Disability Benefit, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement. Overall, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit combines immediate relief with longer-term support to help Canadians manage rising cost-of-living pressures and improve financial stability.
