Framework for diabetes in Canada

I was so pleased to announce alongside the Honourable Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos on Oct. 5th, 2021, the tabling of the national framework designed to support improved access to diabetes prevention, improve management, treatment, research and overall ensure better health outcomes for Canadians.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every Parliamentarian who supported Bill C-237 in an effort to reduce the burden of diabetes on Canadians. I have been working on this issue since day one and I could not be more proud of the monumental progress that has been made. This government is supporting a comprehensive suite of initiatives and targeted investments to help prevent diabetes and other chronic diseases. The framework will address health equities, promote leadership, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The Framework was informed by people living with diabetes, academics, researchers, not-for-profit organizations, provinces and territories, Indigenous communities and other important partners to ensure that it makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those living with diabetes.

To move forward in addressing diabetes in Canada, we must look at social determinants of health and take a people-centred approach. All relevant partners are invited to use the Framework to guide action to address diabetes and advance opportunities in ways that meet their respective mandates and objectives, and that are adapted to their respective community contexts.
