Dear Constituents,

It is a privilege representing you in Parliament, and this week I travelled to Ottawa to continue advocating for Brampton South. We know that COVID19 has presented unique challenges for women, and this week I raised those concerns in the Standing Committee on the Status of Women. With this important work, I will continue to advocate strongly for gender equality in Canada.

I’ve shared a video message to Facebook on how I have continued to advocate for Brampton South over the past few months. I’d encourage you to watch here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=865860697273121.

In Health Committee this week we heard from Medtronic, a healthcare solutions company from Brampton South. We should be proud of their incredible work as they support our local hospitals in Brampton and the GTA. They have an important role to play in the COVID-19 response and I will continue to make sure that voices from Brampton South are brought to committee.

On Wednesday, Canada’s Minister of Finance Bill Morneau updated Parliament and Canadians on how our government is working to stabilize our economy and help families, workers, and small businesses get back on their feet. I was thrilled to hear that more than 3 million employees have been supported by the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, helping Canadians stay in the workforce or return to work.

As the economy begins to safely restart, I continue to urge small businesses in Brampton South that qualify to apply for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS). This program continues to support business owners by helping them keep their workers on the payroll, and helps employees get back to work to continue supporting their families.

As always, my office and I are here to help with any questions or feedback and can be reached by phone at 905-846-0076 or by email at [email protected].

Stay safe while enjoying your summer activities,

Sonia Sidhu, M.P. Brampton South.

MINISTER MORNEAU RELEASES ECONOMIC AND FISCAL SNAPSHOT

On Wednesday, we introduced Canada’s Economic and Fiscal Snapshot. Over the course of the pandemic, we introduced many measures to support families, seniors, students, and businesses. As we begin to safely and gradually restart the economy, it’s important to know what this will all mean for jobs, and what impact it will have on the economy. THE PMs UPDATE ON STRATEGIES TO FIGHT RACISM

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister hosted a two-day virtual Cabinet retreat. It was an opportunity for Ministers to get together to establish priorities for the weeks and months ahead.

So, Cabinet has put together a work plan for the summer months.

Fighting systemic racism, unconscious bias, and discrimination is a top priority for our government and we will continue to listen and work with communities.

CANADIAN SENIORS TO RECEIVE SPECIAL OLD AGE SECURITY (OAS) AND GUARANTEED INCOME SUPPLEMENT (GIS) PAYMENT THIS WEEK

Canadian seniors across the country are facing significant health, economic, and social challenges due to COVID-19. In May, the Prime Minister announced that our government is providing nearly $900 more for single seniors and more than $1,500 for senior couples, on top of their existing benefits, to help these vulnerable Canadians with extra costs during the pandemic.

This week, seniors eligible for the OAS pension received a payment of $300, and those also eligible for the GIS received an additional $200, for a total of $500. This financial support will help Canadian seniors cover increased costs caused by COVID-19 and give them greater financial security in this time of crisis.

As we gradually restart our economy, the Government of Canada will continue to support all Canadians, including seniors and those most vulnerable, and respond to the health, social, and economic impacts of COVID-19.</span>
