August 4th, 2020 – BRAMPTON

Sonia Sidhu, the Member of Parliament for Brampton South welcomes Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau’s announcement that COVID Alert, a new national mobile app, is now available to Canadians for free download. The app helps notify Canadians if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID Alert is another tool Canadians can use to help slow the spread of infection, prevent future outbreaks, and protect our communities as we ease restrictions and restart the economy.

To safeguard the confidentiality and privacy of all Canadians, the app uses strong measures to protect any data it collects and does not track a user's location or collect personally identifiable information. The Privacy Commissioners of Canada and Ontario were consulted on the development of COVID Alert, to ensure the highest level of privacy for Canadians using the app.

“COVID Alert is another great initiative to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of Canadians. I encourage all Canadians to do their part and download COVID Alert, the more of us who download it the more effective it will be.”— Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South.

Transition of CERB to EI

Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Disability Inclusion Carla Qualthrough also announced this week that the Federal Government plans to transition Canadians that are out of work into the Employment Insurance (EI) system. This will be available to Canadians collecting CERB who can't qualify for EI under existing rules. It will include access to training and the ability to work more hours without having a significant decrease in benefit payments.

The new COVID Alert app and this announcement are examples of how the Government of Canada is working tirelessly to protect the health of all Canadians, and support efforts to restart the economy gradually and safely.

"As our economy is gradually restarting, the Government of Canada is committed to ensuring Canadians have the support they need in these challenging times. That's why the Federal Government of Canada has announced the transition of CERB recipients to the EI program.

EI should cover every Canadian who is looking for work, and for those who don’t qualify for EI right now, like gig or contract workers," Sonia Sidhu said.
