Ensuring that seniors in Canada’s long-term care homes receive the quality of care that they deserve
September 12, 2020

“We need to do a better job of caring for the people who built this country by implementing enforceable national standards for the operation of long-term care homes in Canada. While this is a provincial jurisdiction, I believe the Federal Government can play an important role in improving conditions in care homes.” — Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South
September 12, 2020 – BRAMPTON
The Federal Government has taken concrete action to support Canadian seniors throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and help keep them safe as we move forward with the restart of our economy.
6.7 million seniors received a one-time tax-free payment of $300. 2.2 million of which, who are also eligible for the GIS, also received an additional $200. The Government must be there for seniors in long-term care facilities and nursing homes, as we have seen the devastation.
The Canadian Armed Forces went above and beyond to temporarily support long-term care homes during the COVID-19 outbreak. Their report which followed included stories and examples of unacceptable abuse which there are no excuses for.
At Grace Manor in Brampton South, the military report alleged staff “leaving food in a resident’s mouth while they were sleeping,” and “aggressively repositioning a resident,” among other malpractices.
Long-term care must be a key priority in the Speech from the Throne, as we need to act quickly to develop national standards in Canada. This is a critical step in ensuring that a tragedy like this can never happen again and that seniors in our country get the care that they deserve.
