Statement from MP Sonia Sidhu on Diabetes Awareness Month
November 1, 2020

November 1, 2020 – BRAMPTON

Today is the beginning of Diabetes Awareness Month in Canada. One in four Canadians is living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and, without treatment, diabetes can result in life-threatening complications.

Diabetes awareness and education is critical to help identify early signs of diabetes and to prevent the onset for millions of Canadians.

Together, we can make a positive change for Diabetic Canadians across the country. This is something I have been extremely passionate about through my 18+ years as a health care professional in Brampton South.

I have heard from many experts on this matter in Parliament, serving on the Standing Committee on Health; and as a chair of the all-party diabetes caucus. Canada is the birthplace of insulin and through advocacy and education, we are becoming a leader in diabetes awareness.

It is my hope that Diabetes Awareness Month will empower Canadians to take on healthier lifestyles as we continue working to improve the quality of life of those living with diabetes and to find a cure.

Quote:

“November marks Diabetes Awareness Month in Canada and I’m proud to raise awareness about the importance of diabetes education. It’s important that families understand their risks and the actions they can take to prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. I’m encouraging all Canadians to take the risk questionnaire and to promote healthy eating and daily exercise to help keep you safe and well.” Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South
