MP Sonia Sidhu: Continued support for Canadians who have been hardest hit by the pandemic
February 22, 2021

February 22, 2021 – Brampton -

From the beginning of the pandemic, we have been there for Canadians to keep them healthy, safe, and supported. However, many workers and families across the country continue to face challenges in these uncertain times.

Last week, the Prime Minister announced that we’re increasing the number of weeks that the Canada Recovery Benefit, the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit, and Employment Insurance Regular Benefits are available to Canadians.

To begin with, we are extending the Canada Recovery Benefit and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit by 12 weeks. This makes the new maximum that you can claim 38 weeks in total. We are also extending the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit from the current 2 weeks to a new total of 4 weeks. No one should be going to work sick right now. It’s that simple. Finally, we are increasing the help available under regular EI claims to 50 weeks in total, meaning 24 more weeks that you can use if you need it.

The list of government-authorized hotels has also been made available for COVID-19 mandatory hotel stopovers.

If your flight to Canada is scheduled within the next 48 hours, call to reserve and pay for your mandatory 3-night hotel stopover: 1-800-294-8253 (toll-free within North America). 1-613-830-2992 (collect outside of North America).

By increasing the number of available weeks for these important benefits, the Government is giving certainty to workers in hard-hit sectors and their families. New measures at the border will help keep families safe and limit the spread of variants in our community.

Quotes:

“The pandemic has been a challenging time for many workers, causing financial stress and uncertainty. Our commitment to supporting Canadians has not changed, and these extensions will support our workers in Brampton South. As the Prime Minister said, if you need support, or if you have to stay home to take care of your family, these benefits will continue to be there for you.” Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South
