MP Sonia Sidhu welcomes partnership between Canada and the Netherlands to accelerate type 2 diabetes research

MP Sonia Sidhu welcomes the new partnership between Canada and the Netherlands to advance research on type 2 diabetes as announced by Jennifer O’Connell, Member of Parliament for Pickering-Uxbridge, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health.

The Netherland-Canada Type 2 Diabetes Research Consortium aims to help prevent diabetes and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with T2D. The partnership seeks to foster sustainable collaborations between Dutch and Canadian researchers for the faster development of T2D research. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has committed to providing $2 million over the next 5 years to fund the initiative.

This initiative commemorates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin and invests in new research that will support the development of new preventive and therapeutic approaches to reverse the upward trajectory of diabetes prevalence and associated morbidities and reduce the impact of diabetes on individuals, families and communities.

“Diabetes has an effect on far too many Canadians and we must keep working to address this public health priority. As Canada partners with the Netherlands, we hope to improve the lives of those living with type 2 diabetes by collaborating with our international partners. I am excited to see how this new Netherlands-Canada Type 2 Diabetes Research Consortium will contribute to our existing research efforts in Canada and across the world.” — Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South
