Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Visits Brampton to Announce a $120 Million Investment in Affordable Housing
July 20, 2021

Brampton - July 20, 2021

Every Bramptonian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. To address high housing costs in Brampton and across the country, the Government of Canada continues to make smart investments in rental housing. These investments help build stronger communities, create jobs, and grow the middle class, while supporting those facing housing insecurity.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined MP Sonia Sidhu and her Brampton colleagues to announce a Federal investment of $120 million to build a 26-storey, multi-residential, and energy-efficient building located at 40 Lagerfeld Drive, Brampton. This prime location is ideal for young adults who want to live close to where they work and will help over 300 local families find rental housing units.

Yesterday’s announcement was part of the Rental Construction Financing Initiative, which supports rental housing construction projects across the country by providing low-cost, insured loans to developers and municipalities in places where there is a need for additional rental housing units.

Since 2015, through programs like the First-Time Home Buyer Incentive and the Rapid Housing Initiative, the Government of Canada has helped more than one million Canadians have a safe and affordable place to call home.

Just last year, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development announced a more than $276 million financial commitment from the Federal Government through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund for the creation of new affordable housing in Peel. That $276 million investment represented the single largest individual housing investment ever made by the Government of Canada in the Region of Peel.

The Federal Government will continue to invest in affordable housing throughout the country and in Brampton. Housing is not a privilege, it's a right - that is a statement the Federal Government has always and will always stand by.
