January 24, 2023

News Release – Brampton, Ontario

Brampton South Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu continues to raise matters of local concern with Peel Regional Police, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and other partners to ensure the safety and well-being of her community as well as access to quality healthcare in Brampton and Canada. It is something she has heard as a clear request from residents, and she is committed to working with Peel Regional Police, relevant partners and the community.

That is why this afternoon, MP Sonia Sidhu met with Peel Regional Police for the second time this week for an update and to raise feedback from residents covering a wide range of issues including road safety, auto thefts, human trafficking, and gender-based violence.

It follows a meeting she hosted with Honda Canada and Peel Regional Police to address auto thefts, encouraging collaboration among the various partners involved on the issue. MP Sidhu is a member of the National Auto Caucus working with colleagues on supporting local law enforcement.

During the meeting, MP Sidhu emphasized the importance of addressing these issues and the impact they have on the community. She discussed the need for increased patrols in high-risk areas to improve road safety and reduce the number of auto thefts. MP Sidhu also highlighted the importance of working with community organizations and advocacy groups to combat human trafficking and gender-based violence. Brampton’s Safe Centre of Peel uses the leading model to address gender-based violence, which has been proven to show a 95% decrease in homicides over 10 years. In December, MP Sidhu visited San Diego to meet with the District Attorney who recognized this substantial work.

With healthcare being the top concern of many residents, MP Sidhu met with Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel region’s former Chief Medical officer and now the Director of the College of Family Physicians Canada to talk about simplifying access to foreign trained healthcare personnel in Canada, addressing healthcare crisis in our hospitals and continuing to respond to healthcare

“We understand the importance of maintaining community safety and improving health outcomes and we will continue working collaboratively to find solutions that will make our city stronger for everyone,” said MP Sidhu.

MP Sidhu encourages residents to reach out to her office with any feedback or concerns they may have and remains committed to collaborating with Peel Police and other partners to improve outcomes for the community.
