News Release – Brampton, Ontario

In Canada, as well as all over the globe, many countries are making advancements in the advocacy and support for women. Supporting women is important in the development and success of society, and it is a prominent focus of Canada to ensure that Canadian women are seen and heard in our country. Gender equality both locally, and internationally is incredibly important to Canada, and our Federal government is engaged in the larger conversation of empowerment of women everywhere.

This week, MP Sonia Sidhu participated at the 67th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, this year’s theme is Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. Following International Women’s Day it was important for MP Sidhu to continue her empowerment efforts internationally, as well as exchanging expertise and knowledge with other participants. Especially given her role as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women in Parliament.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day let’s continue working together to ensure that all women have the resources and support they need to succeed. Today and everyday we can break down the barriers and empower the women and girls around us.” - MP Sonia Sidhu

This year’s theme primarily focuses on the inequality of access to technology which inhibits many women and girls from advancement in numerous fields. Addressing this issue, as well as how pre-existing systemic discrimination that only worsens the issue is important in creating solutions. Minister Ien, our head of the Delegation of Canada, delivered a speech regarding Canada’s efforts to combat inequality in Canada and internationally through programs like the Feminist International Policy and the National Action Plan to End Gender Based Violence.

Gender equality and advocacy is important both in Canada as well as internationally as MP Sidhu takes great concern and interest in ensuring that women everywhere are afforded the equal opportunity. MP Sidhu is invested in continuing this work and much more to create a better future for Canadians and global citizens.
