Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu recognizes Sikh Heritage Month
April 1, 2023

Brampton, Ontario

Brampton South MP Sonia Sidhu is pleased to recognize that April marks the beginning of Sikh Heritage Month across the country.

Sikhism began around 1500 Common Era, when Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, began teaching the faith. The practices were formalized by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The 10th guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, formed the Khalsa Panth and introduced the five Ks that help form the identity of a Sikh. Women have always played an equal role in Sikhism. Today, we recognize the same principles of gender equality in Canada as the first guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji advocated.

It is clear that Sikh values reflect Canadian values. For over 125 years, the Sikh community has been an integral part of Canada's social, economic, political, and cultural landscape, making invaluable contributions to our country. This month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate these achievements, as well as educate future generations about the rich history.

Sikhism emphasizes principles of volunteership, giving back to communities and providing a helping hand to those in need. That is why the impact of the Sikh community has been so pronounced in Brampton South,

This month, MP Sidhu invites all Bramptonians and Canadians to join her in celebrating and learning about the rich culture and history of Sikh communities across Canada and the world.
