Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces $114M deal with Brampton for housing funding

As the Member of Parliament for Brampton South, I am thrilled to share the fantastic news that the City of Brampton, in partnership with the federal government, has secured a significant funding agreement to enhance our housing capacity. This announcement, made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser, in Brampton, marks a major step forward in addressing the housing crisis faced by our community and indeed, the nation.

The housing situation in Brampton has been a growing concern, with skyrocketing rents and purchase prices primarily driven by a stark shortage of housing supply. This $114 million investment, part of the Trudeau government’s $4 billion Housing Accelerator Fund, aims to address this by adding 3,150 residential units in the next three years and approximately 24,000 homes over the next decade.

Brampton's approach to this funding has been ambitious and innovative, focusing on creating more affordable housing, denser developments, and building near transit areas. This aligns with our goals of implementing inclusionary zoning practices and reducing parking requirements, making the city a model for smart, sustainable growth.

This funding is especially crucial for Brampton, which, as the fastest-growing city in Canada according to the 2021 census, is at the forefront of the national housing shortage and affordability crisis. The challenges we face are significant, as evident in the recent surge in average rents and the unprecedented increase in home prices over the past decade. We are also addressing complex issues like illegal and overcrowded housing.

I commend Mayor Patrick Brown for his leadership and dedication to meeting the housing needs of our city. This investment will greatly assist us in meeting the provincial mandate to build 113,000 housing units by 2030. It is indeed a momentous day for Brampton, reflecting our commitment to building a modern, inclusive, and world-class city.

We are confident that this funding will contribute significantly towards improving housing affordability and accessibility for the residents of Brampton, and we remain committed to working tirelessly to address the challenges and build a better future for our community.
