Our government is banning 324 models of assault-style firearms and guns to keep our communities safe - Sonia Sidhu
December 7, 2024

The Government of Canada has taken further strong steps to tackle gun crime and to uphold its commitment to keep cities and communities safe.

On December 5, 2024, Public Safety Minister, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc announced that 324 additional assault-style firearms are now prohibited in Canada. The government will also introduce measures to ensure all firearms in the market are accounted for and to combat gender-based violence.

“We’re keeping our communities safe by making sure no gun can get into Canada without being approved by the RCMP.” said Sonia Sidhu.

This is part of a broader strategy to tackle gun violence, including investments in border security, tougher firearms controls, and support for intervention programs. Since May 2020, over 2,000 models of assault-style firearms have been banned.

The new prohibition is effective immediately, with an Amnesty Order in place until October 30, 2025, to help individuals and businesses comply with the law. Indigenous Peoples and sustenance hunters can continue using their firearms during the amnesty period.

New regulations will be tabled on December 13, 2024, and further measures to address gun violence will be introduced in January 2025. The government will also regulate large-capacity magazines by March 2025.

A compensation program for affected businesses and owners is underway, with the first phase already begun.

The list of newly prohibited makes and models are provided on public safety webpage on Canada.ca.
