Sonia Sidhu welcomed the federal government’s launch of Canada’s first‑ever Strategic Exports Office, an initiative designed to help Canadian companies secure major international contracts and expand into fast‑growing global markets. The announcement was made by the Hon. Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, at MDA Space in Brampton South — a leading example of Canadian innovation and a key employer in the community.
The Strategic Exports Office, housed within Global Affairs Canada, will bring together diplomatic, financial, and commercial expertise to support Canadian businesses competing in sectors such as aerospace, defence, infrastructure, and energy. The office will help remove trade barriers, coordinate government support, and open doors to new markets around the world.
“Canadian companies are building world‑class technologies, and they deserve world‑class support,” said MP Sonia Sidhu. “By launching the Strategic Exports Office, our government is giving businesses — including innovators right here in Brampton South — the tools they need to compete and win on the global stage.”
Budget 2025 committed to establishing the office as part of Canada’s broader strategy to diversify trade and reduce reliance on the U.S. market. The government has set a target of doubling non‑U.S. exports over the next decade, building on strong growth in 2025 and early 2026.
Minister Sidhu emphasized that the office will act as a “government‑level dealmaker,” helping Canadian firms navigate complex markets and secure high‑value contracts. Last year alone, Canada supported more than $28 billion in international wins for Canadian businesses — a foundation the new office aims to expand.
MP Sidhu also thanked MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley and the MDA team for hosting the announcement. “MDA Space represents the strength of Canadian innovation,” she said. “Their leadership in aerospace and defence shows exactly why Canada must continue to champion our companies abroad.”
The Strategic Exports Office will begin operations immediately, working closely with industry partners, federal departments, and Canadian missions worldwide.
